In 1895, in an old brick school house located in East
Columbus, a group of Christians gathered together by the light of oil
lamps. Reverend H. H. Sheldon preached his first sermon on Sunday night,
October 6, 1895, to the church's twenty-one members which began a three
week revival resulting in a number of conversions. This was the beginning
of East Columbus United Methodist Church In
1950, ground was purchased at Indiana Avenue and Cleveland Street to house
the church's ever-increasing congregation. On September 6, 1959, formal
dedication services of the $200,000.00 debt-free church were held--just
fives years from the date of the first service in the sanctuary. Over
the past one hundred years, forty dedicated, hard-working pastors have
served at East Columbus United Methodist Church. Twenty-one individuals
from the congregation have entered the ministry. Through
the years, we have always believed in the importance of fulfilling the
Great Commission of Christ through local, national and international
outreach and missions. Our church has contributed numerous hours of time
and effort to various forms of Christian outreach. We have also sponsored
many missionaries in the field with both prayer and financial support. Although
the past is but a dim shadow of what used to be, for us, it is also a
reflection of the future, for our vision and goal are the same as they
were for those first members meeting by lamplight. We are committed to all
generations to win, disciple, and serve. We will minister to people where
they are, strengthen and empower disciples on their journey, and glorify
God in all things. No
matter how the world changes around us, our foundation at East Columbus
United Methodist Church remains the same--a loving God who is unchanging
and steadfast through the ages and His Word that will never pass away. It
is our prayer that in the days ahead, our church will continue to grow in
numbers and in dedication to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior as we
continue by His side until He comes again.
